Softball Sweeps Twinbill Over Hillsdale
The Northwood University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Hillsdale Wednesday afternoon (April 24). The Timberwolves won game one 4-0 before posting a 12-6 win in game two.
Northwood has now won six straight and 11 of 13 overall. The Timberwolves stand at 25-14 overall, 15-5 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale, which had won eight straight entering today, falls to 11-16 overall, 10-10 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got going in game one early, plating a pair of runs in the first inning on a groundout and an error. NU then made it 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./ Plymouth). Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) plated what proved to be the final run of the game in the third on a single. Sebald made that lead hold up, holding the Chargers off the scoreboard. Hillsdale had lots of base runners in the game, but Sebald managed to strand 11 runners on base in the game to improve to record to 14-4 overall. Klonowski was the lone NU batter to have two hits in the contest.
Northwood got off to a good start in game two as well, scoring two in the first inning on a two-out single by Marisa Borkowski (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson). NU then scored three runs in the top of the third on a pair of errors by Hillsdale to extend the Northwood lead to 5-0. But Hillsdale fought back, scoring six of the next seven runs of the game to tie the score 6-6 heading into the sixth inning. The Timberwolves lone run in that stretch came on an RBI single by Lindsay Obremski (Williamsburg, Va./Dubois Area). With the score tied in the sixth and two outs, Northwood reached on an error to extend the inning. Obremski then drove the ball into the gap for a double to put the Timberwolves back on top 7-6. NU broke the game open in the seventh, plating five runs. Three of the runs scored on back-to-back home runs by Paige Shields (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina) and Klonowski The final two runs scored on a single by the GLIAC's batting average leader, Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini). Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford) picked up the win in relief, while Sebald came in to get the final six outs of the game to record Northwood's first save of the season. Rachel Hammer (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland) went 4-5 with a double and four runs scored to lead the Northwood offense, while Obremski finished 3-3 with two RBI's.
Northwood returns to action Friday afternoon (April 26) against Wayne State. The doubleheader gets under way at 3:30 p.m.
