Softball Sweeps Pair At SVSU

SAGINAW, MICH. The Northwood University softball team sweeps a pair of games at Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon (April 26). The Timberwolves held the Cardinals scoreless in both games, picking up a 1-0 win in game one and finished 2-0 in game two.

NU is now 26-12 overall, 17-5 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley holds a 25-8 record on the season, 17-5 in the GLIAC.

Sophomore Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) led off the second inning with a stand up double to center field. Tostrud advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Lie (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek). With one out, senior Natalie Lampman (Madison Heights, Mich. / Bishop Foley) earned her 27th RBI on the season scoring Tostrud. Northwood's defense was key in the shutout for the Timberwolves. NU registered a double-play in the top of the third on a line drive to shortstop Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) who then threw to first picking off the base runner. In the bottom of the seventh, Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich. / Garden City) registered the first out of the inning recovering a deflected ball off the pitcher, Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western). Lynn was able to change direction fielding the ball with enough time to throw the runner out at first.

For the game, Tostrud hit 2-3, scoring the lone run for the Timberwolves. Lyn went 2-4 while Lampman registered the lone RBI. Sebald pitched the complete shutout for NU, striking out five against 26 batters.

The Timberwolves got on the board early once again, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Lynn led off the inning with a walk, before advancing to second on a passed ball. Lynn eventually scored on a Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich. / Cabrini) single through the left side for her 32nd RBI on the year. Freshman pitcher, Vanessa Ewing (Dundee, Mich. / Dundee) downed the first three Cardinals in the top of the second. Both teams remained scoreless until Lampman hit a double to center field, scoring Jessica Lie (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) to give Northwood a 2-0 advantage. The Timberwolves were able to hold the lead with another stellar defensive performance. NU's defense registered another double play, to go along with Ewing striking out nine batters in the shutout.

Northwood will travel to Wayne State for a makeup game tomorrow (April 27). First pitch is scheduled for noon.
