The Northwood University softball team closes out the regular season with a pair of losses at Wayne State Sunday afternoon (April 27). The Timberwolves dropped game one 8-0 in just six innings, before falling 9-0 in game two.
NU finished with a regular season record of 26-14 overall, 17-7 in the GLIAC. Wayne State holds a 37-9 record on the year, 17-5 in the GLIAC.
Northwood's season-long offensive strength was not seen in the first game against the Warriors. NU was unable to register a single hit in the contest, while giving up eight runs on 13 hits. The Warriors' pitcher Lyndsay Butler retired 18 of Northwood's 19 batters, as Wayne State registered a single error in the no-hitter. Northwood also registered two errors behind three NU pitchers. Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) started the game and faced 10 batters in 1.1 innings of play. Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) and Kayla Gust (Port Hope, Mich. / Port Hope) also contributed in the pitching efforts. Brown faced 17 batters in 3.2 innings, registering two strikeouts.
The Timberwolves continued to struggle in the second game, allowing 11 hits to score nine runs for a 9-0 finish. Northwood registered just four hits in the contest, led by senior Brittany Merner (Solon, Ohio / Solon) batting 2-3. Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) registered a triple in the third inning, while Malinda Smith (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) also added a hit. Vanessa Ewing (Dundee, Mich. / Dundee) got the start for the Timberwolves, pitching five innings against 22 batters before Brown relieved her for the final two innings.
Northwood will travel to Findlay, Ohio for the GLIAC Tournament next weekend (May 2-4).
