RECAP: Northwood softball picks up a doubleheader split at No. 14 Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon (April 17), with GVSU winning game one 5-0 before the Timberwolves took game two 6-2.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The story of the game occurred early, as the Lakers opening the contest with a big inning in the bottom of the first. GVSU plated four runs in the inning to take control of the game.
  • Grand Valley State added one more run in the sixth to make the score 5-0.
  • Northwood struggled to get anything going offensively, finishing the game with just a pair of singles.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Northwood got on the board for the first time on the day in the top of the second inning on a Emily Mankel sacrifice fly to score Delanie Grundman and give the Timberwolves the lead.
  • The Timberwolves added to their lead in the third, starting with a two-run triple by Julia Gross to score Alexis Koehler and Maddie Coulter.
  • Grundman then brought home Gross with a sac fly to push the advantage to 4-0.
  • NU expanded their lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-run double by Jayna Hance to make the score 6-0.
  • GVSU responded with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-2.
  • Those proved to be the final runs of the game, however. Northwood turned a double play to end the game and earn the win.
