Bio
2026 is Gregg Sauve's 10th year at the helm of the Northwood University softball program. Since being named Northwood's eighth head coach in the summer of 2016, Sauve has guided the Timberwolves to nine straight winning seasons, including eight trips to the conference tournament and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2024.
Sauve and the Timberwolves continued their success in 2025, posting a 28-20 overall record and a 16-8 mark in G-MAC play while earning a berth in the conference tournament. Northwood was regionally ranked throughout the season, appearing at No. 9 in the Midwest Regional rankings while also being listed under consideration for the NCAA Tournament.
The Timberwolves saw multiple student-athletes earn postseason recognition, including All-Conference selections and All-Region honors, and placed two players on the G-MAC All-Tournament Team. Additionally, five Timberwolves were named to the CSC Academic All-District Team, highlighting the program’s success both on the field and in the classroom.
A major milestone came on April 13, 2025 as Sauve became the program’s all-time winningest coach with his 232nd career victory following a series sweep of Thomas More.
Sauve and the Timberwolves clicked the right buttons in 2024. The Timberwolves capped off their second straight 30-win season with a tremendous run in the G-MAC Tournament to capture the program's first conference tournament title. Northwood went 4-0 in the tournament behind All-Conference honoree and Tournament MVP Emily Cox. Northwood captured the auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history.
From 2018-23, Sauve led the Timberwolves to four seasons (COVID-19 shortened 2020) with 25 or more wins and helped 20 different athletes earn All-Conference recognition. This includes a momentous 2021 campaign where the Timberwolves reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time, ending the year with a 29-16 record. NU finished second in the GLIAC in the regular season and reached the GLIAC Tournament finals.
In his first year as head coach, Northwood posted a 19-25 overall record while going 10-12 in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves narrowly missed out on the GLIAC Tournament due to a tiebreaker. NU finished the year with a .455 winning percentage in conference play, one year after Northwood had a .269 clip (7-19).
Sauve brings over 40 years of experience in fastpitch softball to the program in both the men’s and women’s games. Before being named head coach, he was an assistant at Northwood, working with all aspects of the program. During his time coaching, he has been a part of four state championships and over 40 World and National Tournament appearances. Sauve was a part of the 2013 Midland Emerson Aces staff that took home the ISC II World Championship. He also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Midland High School.
Gregg and his wife, Terri, reside in Midland. They have two sons: Brett and Nicholas.
