Track & Field Impresses At SVSU Tune-Up; Nemecek Resets Shot Put Record
OVERVIEW: SVSU TUNE-UP
LOCATION: Saginaw Valley St. – University Center, Mich.
RECAP: Northwood men's and women's track & field concluded their final regular season indoor meet (SVSU Tune-Up) Friday (February 21) in impressive fashion ahead of the G-MAC Indoor Championships next weekend (February 28-March 1). Northwood had 22 athletes set new personal records during the meet, including Will Nemecek resetting his program record shot put.
INSIDE THE MEET
FOR THE MEN
- Will Nemecek reset his program record for the indoor shot put. The senior hit 18.09m to improve his NCAA Provisional mark and ninth-best mark in DII this season.
- Northwood had four athletes qualify for the 60m finals (Diogo Vaz, Blake Vier, Arthur Powell IV, and Andrew Braman). Powell IV finished with an impressive 6.95 PR during the finals to take the 60m competition. Vier and Braman secured third and fourth place, both running a 6.99 final, while Vaz took sixth in 7.03.
- Vaz and Michael Cook were Northwood's top finishers in the 400m heats. Vaz finished second overall with a 49.01 mark and Cook took third in 50.15.
- Vier later took first in the 60m hurdles for the third straight week of competition with an 8.07 NCAA Provisional finish.
- Braman later took second with Powell IV earning fourth in the 200m, both setting new personal bests. Braman finished with a 22.28 PR, while Powell IV had a 22.38 PR.
- Jordan Taiwo set his new PR in the long jump at 6.71m. The Timberwolves secured the top two spots, with Taiwo getting the win and Braman placing second with a 6.44m leap. This marked Braman's first long jump competition in his career.
- Evan Hurley jumped in the Northwood books with a 1.88m clearance in the men's high jump. His mark is now eighth best in program history. Hurley's mark secured him third.
- Preston Earl (4:14.16) and Elliot Carey (4:18.08) led all Timberwolves, placing second and fifth in the men's mile.
- Caleb Palmreuter moved into his second Northwood top-10 list for an indoor event in the past two weeks. Palmreuter secured a second place finish in the men's 800m, finishing in 1:52.92. His mark is now tenth in program history.
- Luke Eros cleared the NCAA Provisional mark for the weight throw again, taking first overall with a 19.12m toss.
FOR THE WOMEN
- Ariel Warner improved her career-best mark in the 800m. Her 2:14.95 finish is second best in program history and is just one second off the school record as well as the NCAA Provisional mark.
- Katherine Haupt also competed in the women's 800m, finishing in 2:16.93, placing third.
- Reina McMahon placed third in the women's high jump for the Timberwolves. Her best clearance came at 1.48m, a new PR which is the eighth best in program history.
- In the 400m, Kaylee Locke paced all Northwood runners, finishing with a PR of 59.77, taking sixth. Her mark is now ninth all-time for the women's indoor 400m for Northwood.
- Breanna Hyde's 5.33m leap in the women's long jump gave her the first place win. Hyde also took fourth in the women's triple jump, posting a 10.25m leap.
- Landry Koski's 3000m performance moved her into tenth in program history. She finished in 10:35.71 to improve her career best.
- Keiyera Johnson and Jenna Gaul posted times qualifying times of 9.64 and 9.79 to head to the 60m hurdle finals. Johnson posted a big 9.35 PR in the finals, taking second and moving into third in program history. Gaul took seventh in 9.76.
- Kelsey Hansen had an impressive 17.42m toss to set her new PR in the weight throw. She placed second overall, and this makes her fourth all-time for the women's weight throw for NU. She also won the shot put competition with a 13.51m toss.
