Men Take Sixth, Women Seventh At G-MAC Indoor Championships; Nemecek Earns Second Straight Shot Put Title
OVERVIEW – G-MAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOCATION: Ashland – Ashland, Ohio
RECAP: Northwood men's and women's track & field tested their teams at the conference championships Friday and Saturday (February 28-March 1). Northwood's men's team took sixth with 35 points while Northwood's women placed seventh with 22 points. Tiffin took home the men's title with 162 points as Ashland won the women's side with 191.5.
INSIDE THE MEET
FOR THE MEN - DAY ONE
- After the first day, the men's team was in seventh place with 10 points. Findlay and Ashland were in the lead with 62.5 and 61 points, respectively.
- Luke Eros led the way for the men, scoring five team points in the weight throw. His 19.77m best toss was good enough for fourth and one of six athletes to clear the NCAA provisional mark.
- Northwood's trio of athletes Blake Vier, Matheu Morrison, and Owen Hager all qualified for the 60m hurdles. Vier placed second in prelims with a 7.93 finish, Morrison third in 8.03, and Hager with an 8.26 PR to take seventh. Both Vier and Morrison cleared the NCAA Provisional mark.
- Diogo Vaz ran a 48.56 PR in the 400m men's race to take eight and qualify for the 400m finals.
- The Men's DMR team of Caleb Palmreuter, Michael Cook, Logan Roka, and Preston Earl earned fourth overall. They claimed five team points finishing in 9:59.03.
FOR THE WOMEN - DAY ONE
- After day one, women's track & field were in a tie for sixth with 10 points. Ashland led the way with 52 points.
- Northwood's women's DMR team of Ariel Warner, Kaylee Locke, Katherine Haupt, and Landry Koski placed fifth with a 12:06.21 finish. The team earned five points while securing the third best time in program history.
- For the second week in a row, Kelsey Hansen set another PR in the women's weight throw, this week hitting 17.55m. Her best gave the Timberwolves three team points finishing sixth overall. Nine athletes cleared the weight throw NCAA Provisional mark, including Hansen. She owns the 29th best weight throw mark in DII this season.
- Sarah Zehr scored two for the women, placing seventh in the 5K with an 18:06.16 finish.
FOR THE MEN - DAY TWO
- Will Nemecek won his second consecutive Indoor title for the men's shot put. The senior earned First Team All-G-MAC honors by placing first in the event. His 17.84m toss on his fifth attempt proved to be the difference. He gave Northwood 10 team points for the win.
- Luke Eros took fourth in the men's weight throw with a 19.77m mark. He secured another five points for the Timberwolves.
- Diogo Vaz PRd yet again in the 400m finals, improving his mark to clearing the NCAA Provisional mark at 48.41. He finished seventh, earning two team points.
- Owen Hager was Northwood's only runner to finish the 60m hurdle finals, taking sixth in 8.31. His finish gave Northwood three points.
- Caleb Palmreuter took fifth in the men's mile, improving his personal best to 4:12.13 while placing fifth and earning four team points. The freshman now holds the fifth best mark in NU history.
FOR THE WOMEN- DAY TWO
- Hansen set her second PR of the weekend in the women's shot put. Her first toss of the event measured 14.02m and earned her a fourth overall finish. She improves her NCAA Provisional mark by becoming just the third Northwood women's field athlete to break the 14m barrier in the shot. She also now claims the 24th best toss in NCAA DII this season.
- Ariel Warner ran one of Northwood's best 800m races in program history. Her 2:13.85 mark was .5 off the program record, placing. She became the first female runner to clear an NCAA Provisional mark since 2020.
