Women's Basketball Opens Season With 91-59 Win Over Saint Joseph's
The Northwood University women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 season with a 91-59 win over Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon (November 10).
The contest was held at Saginaw Valley State University and was the opening game of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge.
Northwood took control of the game right away, scoring the first 12 points of the game. The Pumas got back to within four at one point, but a 12-1 NU run extended Northwood's lead to 24-9. The Timberwolves would lead by as many as 31 before taking a 54-24 lead to the break. Northwood shot 51.4 percent (18-35) while holding St. Joseph's to 28.6 percent (8-28).
The Timberwolves continued to dominate play in the second half. Their biggest lead of the game was 70-30, which came at the 12:26 mark.
Overall, Northwood shot 48.4 percent (31-64) compared to 30.6 percent for the Pumas. Northwood also dominated the glass, finishing with a 53-29 edge on the board.
Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Sarah Spring (Brighton, Mich.). She netted a career-high 19 points, going 7-7 from the floor and 2-2 from 3-point range. Sarah Susan (Byron Center, Mich.) added 13 points and six rebounds, while Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) added 12 points and six rebounds. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) totaled 11 points and a pair of steals. Kaitlin Susan (Byron Center, Mich.) finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
Northwood will take on Lewis Sunday afternoon (November 11) to finish the tournament. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
