Women's Basketball Falls To Lewis 91-77
The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season Sunday afternoon (November 11), falling to Lewis 91-77.
The Timberwolves are now 1-1 overall on the season. Lewis improves to 2-0 with the win.
Lewis came out fast at the start of the game, going on a 17-2 run to go to make the score 20-7 at the first media timeout. The Flyers led 32-13 with 8:24 remaining in the half, but Northwood scored nine straight points to make the score 32-23. However, Lewis responded with 14 of the next 18 points to get the lead right back to 19. The Flyers eventually led 52-36 at the break, thanks in large part to shooting 54.3 percent from the floor in the half (19-35).
The Timberwolves played a better second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome. NU got the lead down to 11 and 10 on two separate occasions, but that is as close as Northwood would get.
For the game, Northwood shot 34.2 percent from the floor (25-73), compared to 47.8 percent for the Flyers. Both teams took care of the ball, combining for 19 turnovers in the contest (10 – Lewis, 9 – Northwood).
Three Timberwolves finished in double figures for the game, led by senior guard Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek). She netted 18 points, connecting on four 3-point field goals. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Sarah Spring (Brighton, Mich.) had 13 points and five rebounds. Sarah Susan (Byron Center, Mich.) finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and three assist.
Northwood returns to action November 22 at the Oahu Classic. Northwood will face Augustana (S.D.) for a 7 p.m. EST contest in Oahu, Hawaii.
