Women's Basketball Loses At The Buzzer To Tiffin 59-58
The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a tough 59-58 contest to Tiffin Thursday night (January 3).
Northwood falls to 6-7 overall, 4-3 in the GLIAC. Tiffin stands at 6-5 overall, 3-4 in the GLIAC.
Tiffin hit their first three shots of the game, but Northwood's defense would hold the Dragons scoreless for over 12 minutes after that. Northwood scored 14 straight points in that stretch and would lead by as many as nine in the half. A late push by the Dragons made the score 25-23 Northwood at the break. The Timberwolves shot 37.0 percent from the floor (10-27) compared to 34.8 percent for Tiffin (8-23). The Dragon's 3-point shooting helped Tiffin stay close in the half, going 4-8 from beyond the arc.
Northwood led nearly the entire second half and held an advantage as large as eight points, but Tiffin hung around. Tiffin trailed NU 58-56 with less than four seconds remaining when TU's Stephanie Kelly knocked down her only 3-point attempt of the game to put the Dragons up 59-58. Northwood's desperation triple at the buzzer was no good, giving Tiffin the win. The Dragons led for a total of just 19 seconds in the second half.
For the game, Northwood shot 33.3 percent from the floor (20-60) while Tiffin rallied to get to 40.7 percent (22-54). Northwood finished with advantages in free throws made (14-10), rebounding (41-36), points in the paint (30-20), second chance points (8-2), fast break points (8-0) and bench points (22-10) in the loss.
Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) led Northwood with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) had 13 points and six rebounds.
Northwood will host Ohio Dominican Saturday afternoon (January 5). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
