The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 74-60 contest at Wayne State Thursday night (January 10).
Northwood is now 7-8 overall, 5-4 in the GLIAC. Wayne State improves to 8-4 overall, 6-2 in the GLIAC.
The Warriors took control of the game early, leading 16-3 in the opening 6:30 of the contest. Northwood out-played the Warriors the rest of the half, eventually cutting the lead to 31-24 at halftime. Both teams struggled from the floor in the half – WSU finished at 33.3 percent (9-27) while Northwood finished at 25.0 percent (8-32).
Wayne State scored the first nine points of the second half to go up 40-24 and would not look back from there. Northwood got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
WSU shot 51.6 percent in the second half (16-31) to finish at 43.1 percent overall (25-58). Northwood finished at 31.0 percent (18-58). The Warriors dominated the glass, finishing with a 55-33 edge in rebounding.
After missing six games due to injury, Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) returned to action to score a team-high 15 points. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) finished with 11 points, while Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) added 10.
Northwood will return to action Saturday (January 12) against Lake Superior State. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
