Women's Basketball Falls To Michigan Tech 65-59

The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 65-59 contest to Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 24).

Northwood is now 9-10 overall, 7-6 in the GLIAC.  Michigan Tech improves to 12-5 overall, 10-3 in the GLIAC.

MTU opened up as much as a 10-point lead in the first half, but Northwood fought back to cut the lead down to 33-29 with 2:02 remaining in the half.  The Huskies connected on a last-second jumper to make the score 38-31 at the break.  Northwood shot 40.9 percent from the floor (9-22) but went 12-12 from the foul line.  MTU finished at 46.9 percent (15-32) from the floor.  Turnovers proved to be the key stat from the opening half – 12 NU giveaways resulted in the Huskies holding a 16-0 edge in points off turnovers.

Northwood got off to a great start in the second half, out-scoring Michigan Tech 15-4 over the opening eight minutes.  The Timberwolves eventually led 52-45 with 9:40 to go when the Huskies made the key run of the contest.  MTU scored 14 of the next 16 points in less than five minutes to take a 59-54 lead.  Northwood was within two at 61-59 at the two minute mark, but the Huskies scored the final four points to earn the win.

For the game, Northwood finished at 39.5 percent (17-43) compared to Michigan Tech at 37.5 percent (21-56).  NU also held the advantage at the foul line, going 23-24 (95.8 percent) compared to MTU at 17-21 (81.0 percent).  The Huskies earned the win thanks out-scoring the Timberwolves 18-6 from 3-point range and 22-8 in points off turnovers.

Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) led the way for Northwood, finishing with 18 points.  Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) added nine points and seven rebounds.

Northwood will host Northern Michigan Saturday (January 26).  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
