The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 74-51 contest at Saginaw Valley State Saturday night (February 3).
Northwood is now 10-11 overall, 8-7 in the GLIAC. SVSU improves to 9-10 overall, 7-8 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves trailed 18-16 with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half when the Cardinals started what proved to be the key run of the game. SVSU out-scored Northwood 12-2 the rest of the half, which put the Cardinals up 30-18 at the break. After opening the game by making three of their first four shots, Northwood made just three of their final 27 shots to finish 6-31 from the floor in the opening half (19.4 percent).
SVSU kept the momentum going to open the second half, scoring 14 of the first 17 points to extend their lead to 44-21. The Cardinals eventually led by as many as 33 points.
Northwood finished the game at 30.6 percent from the floor overall, connecting on 19-62 attempts. SVSU's offense had a strong all-around night, shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (24-48), 66.7 percent from 3-point range (6-9) and 83.3 percent from the foul line (20-24).
Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) led Northwood in scoring in the game, finishing with nine points.
Northwood will host Wayne State Thursday night (February 7). Game time is set for 8 p.m.
