Women's Basketball Loses At Northern Michigan 71-56
The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 71-56 contest to Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon (February 23).
NU falls to 11-16 overall, 9-12 in the GLIAC. Northern Michigan improves to 13-12 overall, 10-11 in the GLIAC.
The loss eliminates Northwood from contention for the GLIAC Tournament. The Timberwolves could still tie for the eighth and final position with Northern Michigan, but the Wildcats own the tiebreaker over the Timberwolves thanks to their win over Michigan Tech earlier this season.
Northwood scored seven of the first nine points of the game to lead by five early on. But the Wildcats were the better team for the rest of the half, going up by as many as eight before halftime. NU fought back to cut the deficit to 32-27 at the break. Northern Michigan shot 52.2 percent from the floor (12-23) while Northwood finished at 39.1 percent (9-23).
The Timberwolves remained close for the majority of the second half, but could not get over the hump. Northwood trailed 54-48 with 5:45 remaining, but the Wildcats scored four straight to get the lead back up to 10. NU got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Jordyn Nurenberg (St. John's, Mich.) led the way for Northwood, finishing with 13 points. Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) finished with nine points, six rebounds and five assists.
Northwood will finish the season with a game against rival Saginaw Valley State Saturday evening (March 2). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
