Women's Basketball Takes 90-82 Overtime Win Over Ferris State
The Northwood University women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 90-82 overtime win over Ferris State Thursday night (January 23).
Northwood has now won four straight games to improve to 9-6 overall, 7-4 in the GLIAC. FSU falls to 5-8 overall, 5-6 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a great start in the game, particularly from beyond the arc. NU's fifth three in less than six minutes put the Timberwolves up 20-8. That would be the Timberwolves' biggest lead of the opening half. FSU came back to eventually tie the game, but NU finished strong to take a 43-40 lead at the break. The two teams combined to knock down 13 triples in the half (NU 7, FS 6).
FSU played a better second half and eventually opened up a 74-66 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the game. But the Timberwolves took over from that point, scoring the final eight points of regulation to force overtime at 74-74.
Once in overtime, Northwood continued to be the better team. The Timberwolves out-scored the Bulldogs 16-8 in OT and 24-8 over the final nine minutes of the game.
Northwood finished the game at 46.8 percent from the floor (29-62). NU also went 10-27 from 3-point range (37.0 percent). FSU finished at 45.8 percent overall (33-72) and 47.4 percent from 3-point range (9-19). The foul line was big for Northwood, as the Timberwolves out-scored the Bulldogs 22-7 at the stripe.
NU's backcourt was the key to the win, as junior Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) and Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of Lakes) had career days. Robak netted a career-high 31 points while adding eight rebounds and three assists. Rivette also had a career-high in points, finishing with 26. She also had six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) added 13 points and three assists.
Northwood will host Grand Valley State Saturday (January 25). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
