Women's Basketball Falls At Michigan Tech 81-69
The Northwood University women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with an 81-69 loss at Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 30).
Northwood falls to 10-7 overall, 8-5 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech improves to 12-4 overall, 10-2 in the GLIAC.
The majority of the first half was tight – there were five ties and 13 lead changes in the opening 16 minutes of play. Northwood led 28-27 with just over three minutes remaining when the Huskies went on the key run of the game. MTU scored the final nine points of the half to take a 36-28 lead at the break. Both MTU (43.8 percent) and NU (42.6 percent) shot similar numbers from the floor, but four more Northwood turnovers (9-5) allowed the Huskies to get off six more field goal attempts.
The offenses both performed at a high level in the second half - the teams each shot 50 percent from the floor and combined for 86 points. Northwood got within five at 40-35 only to see Michigan Tech score 12 of the next 16 points to make the lead 52-39. The Timberwolves got no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Overall, Michigan Tech shot 46.9 percent overall (30-64) compared to Northwood at 46.3 percent (25-54). MTU made one more 3-pointer than the Timberwolves (4-3) and one more free throw (17-16).
Three Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) with 19. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) added 18 points, while Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) added 16. Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) finished with six points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Northwood will travel to Northern Michigan Saturday (February 1). Game time is set for 11 a.m.
