Women's Basketball Falls To SVSU 67-61
The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 67-61 contest to Saginaw Valley State Monday night (February 3).
Northwood falls to 10-9 overall, 8-7 in the GLIAC. SVSU improves to 10-7 overall, 8-6 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves were the better team for the majority of the first half, leading by as many as 10 points. NU eventually took a 36-32 lead to the locker room. SVSU out-shot the Timberwolves in the half (50.0-46.7 percent), but the Cardinals committed six more turnovers (13-7).
NU's offense went cold in the second half, finishing with a 26.5 shooting percentage in the second half (9-34). SVSU connected on 46.9 percent after the break (15-32). Despite their shooting struggles, NU still had the ball trailing by one point (59-58) with less than three minutes to go, but turned the ball over. A 3-pointer by the Timberwolves then made it a two-point game in the final 30 seconds (63-61). Northwood forced a missed shot from the Cardinals on the following possession, but SVSU grabbed the offensive rebound to clinch the victory.
For the game, Northwood finished at 35.9 percent from the floor (23-64). SVSU shot 48.3 percent (28-58). The Cardinals committed 12 more turnovers than the Timberwolves (22-10) while SVSU finished with a 45-30 edge in rebounding).
Three Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) and Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.). They each finished with 13. Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) added 12 points. Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Northwood returns to action Thursday at Wayne State (February 3). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
