The Northwood Timberwolves women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 contest at Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday night (August 30).
The contest was the season opener for both teams.
The game was scoreless until the 19th minute when senior forward Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) netted an unassisted goal to put the Timberwolves on top. The goal was the 45th of her career, which matched the Northwood school record held by Amy Snyder. Watson already holds the Northwood records for points in a career (108) while tying for second in the NU record books in assists (18).
The score remained 1-0 at the halftime. UWP held a 6-1 advantage in shots for the half (3-1 on goal).
In the second half, the Rangers offensive attack came to life. Parkside netted goals in the 58th, 70th and 82nd minute to go up 3-1. The Timberwolves got back into the game in the 84th minute on a long goal from junior Madison Pines (Troy, Mich.). The defender's first career goal cut the lead to 3-2. . Northwood had a couple of opportunities in the UWP end, but were unable to tie the game.
For the match, the Rangers finished with an 18-8 advantage on shots and a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Freshman keeper Julie Shields (Berkley, Mich.) made six saves in her first career start.
Northwood returns to action next Friday (September 7) in a non-GLIAC contest at Saginaw Valley State. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
