Bio

Mike Korhonen was named the fifth head coach in the history of Northwood University's women’s soccer program in April 2023. In just three seasons, he has elevated the Timberwolves to unprecedented success, establishing Northwood as one of the rising programs in the Midwest Region.

Korhonen wasted no time making an impact. In his debut season in 2023, he guided Northwood to a historic 15-4-3 record and a dominant 12-1-1 mark in G-MAC play. The Timberwolves captured both the G-MAC regular season and tournament championships and earned their first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, Korhonen was named the 2023 G-MAC Coach of the Year and coached three All-G-MAC honorees.

The momentum continued in 2024 as Northwood posted a 13-3-5 record and advanced to the G-MAC Tournament Championship for the second straight year.

In 2025, Korhonen once again led Northwood to a strong campaign, finishing 11-3-6 overall and 7-2-5 in conference action. The Timberwolves went undefeated at home (5-0-3) en route to the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance.

Before taking over the program, Korhonen served as an assistant coach under Chelsea Hunter from 2018–22. During that period, Northwood compiled a 32-28-5 record and recorded several program milestones, including:

  • First winning season since 2004 (2021)

  • Then-record six G-MAC wins in 2021

  • Program-best nine conference wins in 2022

  • Hosting a G-MAC Tournament match for the first time (2022)

  • First back-to-back winning seasons since 1998–99

Korhonen also contributed to the Northwood men’s soccer program from 2016–18, focusing on goalkeeper development and helping guide the Timberwolves to the 2017 GLIAC regular season and tournament championships.

Before joining Northwood, Korhonen served as head boys’ coach at Lake Fenton High School (2012–14), leading the program to its winningest season in 2014. His extensive club coaching experience includes tenure with Michigan Arrows (2010–15) and Michigan Nationals (2015–20).
He also served two stints as head coach at Powers Catholic High School (2006–12, 2012–18), capturing three Michigan state championships.

From 2020–22, Korhonen worked as a talent evaluator for the Michigan Olympic Development Program.

Korhonen resides in Bay City, Michigan, with his wife, Courtney, and their son, Charlie.
