Tetyana Payvch Named GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year - Four NU Players Earn All-GLIAC Honors

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women's tennis team placed four players on the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) team, including the Player of the Year, the league announced Friday night (October 26).

Senior Tetyana Payvch was named the GLIAC Player of the Year as well as First Team All-GLIAC. Senior Carol Arnez-Mercado was also named First Team All-GLIAC, while junior Kate Berestovenko earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors. Sophomore Elizaveta Velichko was named to the Honorable Mention team.

Pavych led Northwood from the top of the lineup in both singles and doubles. She went 7-2 at No.  1 singles and a perfect 9-0 at No. 1 doubles with partner Arnez-Mercado. Over her career for the Timberwolves, Pavych has gone 60-8 overall in singles (37-4 in the GLIAC) and 42-10 in doubles (29-2 the GLIAC). This marks the eighth time in program history that Northwood has earned the Player of the Year award in women's tennis.

Arnez-Mercado has been outstanding for Northwood from the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. She is unbeaten on the year for the Timberwolves, going 8-0 in singles and 9-0 in doubles. Arnez-Mercado finishes her career earning First Team All-GLIAC honors all four years. For her career, Arnez-Mercado has gone 51-15 in GLIAC play combined (23-11 in singles, 38-4 in doubles).

Berestovenko continued to be a force for Northwood in the middle of the lineup, going 8-0 mainly at No. 3 singles. She also teamed with Iryna Trstan to post a 7-2 record at No. 2 doubles. In her career, Berestovenko is undefeated in singles in dual matches, standing at 34-0 overall (19-0 in the GLIAC). Overall, she has gone 62-8 in dual matches in her three-year career (28-8 in doubles).

Velichko has been strong for Northwood at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles. She has gone 7-2 in singles (1-1 at No. 3, 6-1 at No. 4) and 8-1 at No. 3 doubles with partner Vasilisa Mikhaylova. In her two years at Northwood, Velichko is 26-8 in GLIAC play (14-3 singles/12-5 doubles).

Northwood went 8-1 in the GLIAC this season, sharing the conference championship with Grand Valley State. They are currently competing in the GLIAC Tourament.
