Volleyball Earns 3-0 Sweep Over Wayne State

The Northwood University volleyball team extended their winning streak to nine matches with a 3-0 sweep over Wayne State Saturday afternoon (October 6). Set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-18.

Northwood is now alone in the lead in the GLIAC at 14-3 overall, 9-0 in the GLIAC. Wayne State falls to 12-5 overall, 7-2 in the GLIAC.

The story of the match proved to be blocking. Wayne State entered the night ranked No. 1 nationally in blocking, averaging 3.13 blocks per set. Northwood came into the match ranked 245th nationally (out of 277) at 1.16 per set. But Northwood's blockers came to play tonight, as the Timberwolves finished with a 10-9 edge for the match in blocking.

Overall, both teams played well defensively. Northwood finished with a .133 attack percentage (39-23-120), while Wayne State ended up at -.008 (23-24-119). NU finished with a 62-53 advantage in digs for the contest.

Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine) led Northwood with 12 kills, 10 digs and six blocks. Ally Hoomaian (Novi, Mich.) added 10 kills and a .318 attack percentage (10-2-22). Setter Jordan Dunn (Bowling Green, Ohio) finished with 27 assists and 18 digs.

Northwood will head to the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover next weekend (October 12-13).
