Volleyball Falls At Northern Michigan 3-1
The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match at Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon (November 8). Set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19
Northwood is now 6-18 overall, 3-14 in the GLIAC. Northern Michigan stands at 14-13 overall, 14-4 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a strong start in the opening set to take an early 1-0 lead. Northwood took leads of 4-0, 5-2 and 7-3 to start the match. NMU came back to take the lead, eventually going up 16-12. But Northwood made a big run late to earn the set, as the Timberwolves scored 10 of the next 12 points to go up 22-18 before going on to win the set 25-21. Northwood hit .229 (14-6-35) in the set while Northern Michigan finished at .083 (11-8-36).
The second set was close throughout – with neither team leading by more than three points. With NMU leading 22-21 late in the second, the Wildcats scored three of the final four points to earn the set 25-22 and tie the overall match 1-1. Northern Michigan hit .121 in the set, while Northwood finished at .179 (11-6-28).
A 10-1 Wildcat run in the third set with the score tied 11-11 was the key to NMU going up 2-1. Both teams hit will in the set – Northwood finished at .303 (13-3-33) while Northern Michigan finished at .273 (12-3-33).
Northwood led the fourth set 10-7, but Northern Michigan once again came up with a run to earn the match. The Wildcats turned that three point deficit into a 19-13 lead. NU got back to within three at 22-19 only to see Northern Michigan score the final three points of the match to earn the win.
Overall, Northwood hit .217 (43-18-115) while Northern Michigan finished at .161 (50-28-137). Serving was a big part of the Northwood win, as the Wildcats finished with an 8-1 edge in aces.
Krysta Kramer (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) led Northwood with 11 kills. She also added 10 digs and three blocks. Marissa Pomaville (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) had eight kills and four blocks, while Jaclyn Kimmet (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield) had 21 assists and 13 digs.
Northwood will finish their season with a match at Lake Superior State Sunday afternoon (November 9). First serve is set for 3 p.m.
