Baseball Earns Dramatic 15-12 Comeback Win Over GVSU At The NCAA Regionals

RECAP: Northwood baseball advances to the Midwest Region #2 final with a wild 15-12 win over host Grand Valley State Friday afternoon (May 16).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Northwood got off to a fast start in the game, scoring the opening run of the contest on a RBI single by Josh Getz in the first to lead 1-0.
  • Brendan Hammer followed with a big hit, a three-run double to right center to make the score 4-0.
  • Ben DeVries followed with a double of his own to give the Timberwolves a 5-0 lead after one inning.
  • Myles Beale connected on his third home run of the post season in the second inning to push the lead to 6-0.
  • Northwood added one more in the second on a Getz RBI fielder's choice, giving NU a 7-0 lead after two.
  • That is when the Lakers started their comeback. GVSU plated one in the third and two in the fourth to get within four at 7-3.
  • The key inning of the game came in the fifth, when Grand Valley State plated eight runs. The big swing of the inning was a grand slam by Ryan Dykstra. That made the score 11-7.
  • Northwood got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a Logan Voth RBI double.
  • The Lakers got an insurance run in the seventh to make the score 12-8.
  • Grand Valley State appeared to be ready to win, leading by four going into the bottom of eighth. But that is when the Timberwolves responded, starting with a bases loaded hit by pitch by Getz.
  • Hammer followed with a two-run single that cut the lead to 12-11.
  • A GVSU error allowed Getz to come home, tying the game at 12-12.
  • Ben DeVries came through with the biggest hit of his career, a three-run homer to left center that capped a seven-run eighth inning that put NU on top 15-12
  • Connor Foley went on to record the final three outs to give the Timberwolves the dramatic victory.
